Power & Efficiency
The NOA Development Kit is capable of transmitting up to 50W power at an efficiency of up to 90%. Generally, higher voltage / power systems are more efficient, as can be seen in the chart below.
Detection & Communications
NOA's wireless charging system uses modulation of the power signal to send and receive bytes for communication between the transmitter and receiver. This communications system is used for detecting the presence of a valid receiver for turning on power transmission and turning off power transmission once the receiver has been removed. It is also critical in enabling foreign object detection.
Foreign Object Detection
A foreign object is a metallic object that poses a risk of induced heating if it sits inside a changing magnetic field. Foreign object detection allows the system to discern between a valid receiver that should be powered, and a foreign object that should not. This is important as the heating induced in a foreign object could cause harm to the device or a user interacting with it.
Distance & Misalignment
Included in your development kit are three pairs of planar coils of different sizes. 30mm, 50mm and 75mm.
The NOA system is compatible with any coil design and size, whether planar or non-planar. The efficiency of the overall system is highly dependent on the distance and misalignment between the transmitter/receiver coils. And the distance at which efficient power transfer can be accomplished is dependent on the size of the transmitter / receiver coils. Typically we can achieve good efficiency (85%+) at offsets of up to 60% of the transmitting coil radius. As you approach a full diameter of offset, the efficiency continues to decrease, as can be seen in the chart below.
Protection Features
To ensure safe, continuous and reliable operation of our system we have implemented many safety measures including over voltage, current and temperature protection. Specifically, the transmitter has protections for: overvoltage , overcurrent, coil overtemperature, power stage overtemperature. All of these protections can be set to any value desired using our web configuration tool.
Size & Weight
Due to our high efficiency, our technology generates minimal heat. As a result there is no need for additional passive or active cooling systems which allow the overall package to be extremely compact and lightweight.
Configuration
A major goal for our technology is to make it as easy to integrate as possible. We aim to accomplish this through the use of our web configuration tool, which gives integrators the control and guidance that they need to put wireless charging in any application they desire.
